Six-Run Eighth Guides Dash to Series Win at Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Thanks to a six-run eighth inning on Thursday night, the Dash outlasted the Lynchburg Hillcats 9-4 at City Stadium to earn a series victory. With the win, the Dash (29-29, 67-55) now sit three games back of the Fayetteville Woodpeckers for the second-half Southern Division wild card spot.

With the Hillcats (26-31, 58-66) lead 4-3 in the eighth inning, Justin Garza (6-9) recorded two outs in the eighth inning before running into trouble. Carlos Perez smacked a double to left-center, and, after JJ Muno pinch ran for Perez, Jameson Fisher tied the game with a run-scoring single to right-center.

Jonathan Teaney replaced Garza, and he proceeded to give up an infield single to Johan Cruz. After Tate Blackman drew a walk, Yeyson Yrizarri recorded an RBI walk to give the Dash a 5-4 lead. Then, Steele Walker followed by registering an RBI walk to make it a 6-4 contest. Tyler Frost capped the scoring with a three-run double to left to increase the lead to five.

Jose Nin (5-3) recorded two perfect innings to earn the victory, and Will Kincanon locked down the win with a scoreless ninth. The Dash have now won seven out of their last nine contests.

Starting for the Dash on a MLB rehab assignment, Manny Banuelos began his second outing with the Dash by recording two quick outs before the Hillcats took the lead in the first. With two on and two outs, Jason Rodriguez lined a run-scoring single to left-center to put Lynchburg ahead 1-0.

But, in the fourth, the White Sox first-rounder Andrew Vaughn knotted up the contest against Cody Morris. On a 3-2 pitch, Vaughn belted his second High-A homer to left-center to knot the contest at one.

Mitch Reeves put the Hillcats back ahead in the fourth with an RBI single before the Dash tied it again in the sixth when Vaughn scored on a wild pitch.

Lynchburg made it a 4-2 contest on a two-run shot from Jodd Carter in the sixth, but Winston-Salem scored one run in the seventh before the Dash's big eighth frame.

Winston-Salem hits the road for a three-game set at Potomac starting on Friday. The Dash send left-hander Konnor Pilkington (3-9, 5.54 ERA) to the hill against P-Nats right-hander Malvin Pena (5-9, 6.42 ERA). Following Winston-Salem's road trip, the Dash host the Salem Red Sox for the final four home games of the season from August 26-29. The series begins with a 7 p.m. game on Monday, August 26. Tuesday's game will be the first-ever 336 Counts Community Day, with first pitch at 3:36 p.m., free parking and discounted food and beer prices.

The series with Salem continues with Winston Wednesday, with $10 presale tickets and the Dash wearing their retro Warthogs jerseys. Thursday, August 29, will be the final regular season home game of the 2019 season.
