Six-Run Barrage Jumps Woodpeckers to Win over GreenJackets
August 31, 2021 - Carolina League (CarL)
Fayetteville Woodpeckers News Release
FAYETTEVILLE, NC - A six-run rally in the fifth inning on Tuesday night broke up a no-hit bid and surged the Fayetteville Woodpeckers (47-56) to a 6-4 victory over the Augusta GreenJackets (42-61) to open the series at Segra Stadium. The six runs crossed on seven consecutive hits in Fayetteville's largest two-out rally this season.
Only one base runner reached on Augusta starter Rainiery Rodriguez (L, 2-3) before the fifth inning. Jordan Brewer drew a two-out walk in the first but was left on after Justin Williams grounded out to short. Rodriguez retired 12 in a row from that point and carried a no-hit bid into the fifth inning.
Jairo Lopez made the start in his Woodpeckers debut after being promoted to the roster on Monday. Lopez allowed a pair of runs in the second inning on a Cade Bunnll solo home run and a Christian Robinson RBI double. In the fourth, Justyn-Henry Malloy added a two-run home run that pushed Augusta ahead 4-0. Lopez worked his way out of the fourth, finishing his debut with four strikeouts and just one walk.
Heitor Tokar (W, 1-3) took over in the fifth and faced the minimum in the frame thanks to an inning-ending double play.
After two quick outs in the bottom of the fifth, Victor Mascai broke up the no-no and the shutout effort with a solo home run into the bullpens, his fifth of the season to make it 4-1. Miguel Palma and Kobe Kato extended the inning for Michael Sandle at the top of the order, who roped a two-run double off the left field wall. Back within a run at 4-3, Chad Stevens tied the game with an RBI double and immediately scored the go-ahead run on a Jordan Brewer single to right field. Justin Williams capped the stretch off seven straight hits with an RBI single that jumped it to 6-4 and chased Rodriguez from the game.
Pitching with the lead, Tokar went the distance, setting down the side in order in the seventh and eighth. In the ninth, Tokar rebounded from a hit by pitch by striking out Malloy and getting Christian Robinson to groundout and end the game.
The series continues at Segra Stadium on Wednesday night with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 pm ET. The Woodpeckers are scheduled to start RHP Elian Rodriguez and Augusta will start Atlanta Braves first round draft pick from 2021 RHP Ryan Cusick.
