Columbia Fireflies News Release
COLUMBIA, SC - The Columbia Fireflies fielding wasn't sharp in the opening game against the Charleston RiverDogs Tuesday night. The team committed four errors, resulting in three unearned runs coming home to drop the game 8-1. The four errors were the most Columbia has allowed in a single game this season.
Early offense was the key for the Charleston RiverDogs (72-31) who scored a pair of runs in each of the first three innings, sending Wander Arias (L, 0-1) to the bench having given up six runs, four of which were earned.
Columbia's (47-56) lone run came in the bottom of the first. Diego Hernandez led things off with a single, stole his 29th base to get into scoring position and then came home off a broken-bat single from Saul Garza.
After those two hits in the first and one hit in the second, the Fireflies bats were stifled the remainder of the game. The Fireflies couldn't get another hit after the second frame, and only drew two walks off of Ben Brecht (W, 5-2), Nomar Rojas, Ian Leatherman and Graeme Stinson.
Columbia continues their series with the Charleston RiverDogs tomorrow evening at 7:05 pm at Segra Park. LHP Rylan Kaufman (2-3, 4.38 ERA) gets the nod for Columbia and Charleston will go with RHP Sandy Gaston (1-0, 2.12 ERA).
Tomorrow is Trash the Poop Wag-Along Wednesday at Segra Park. Fans can bring their leashed and rabies vaccinated dog out to the ballpark with the purchase of a berm ticket. It's also White Claw Wednesday where fans can enjoy a 16 oz can of White Claw Seltzers for only $5. Tickets are available at FirefliesTickets.com.
