Six Mets Players Selected to Participate in the 2009 FSL All-Star Game

Port St. Lucie, FL - The Florida State League office in Daytona Beach released the 2009 Florida State League All-Star teams for this year's game to be played in Fort Myers, FL on Saturday, June 20th at Hammond Stadium, the home of the Fort Myers Miracle, game time is 7:35 PM. Florida State League managers, official scorers and media representatives from around the league voted six St. Lucie Mets to the mid-season classic. The Mets will send starting pitcher Eric Niesen, catcher Francisco Pena, infielder Reese Havens, and outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis to represent the Mets and the Southern division. Starting pitchers Brad Holt and Jenrry Mejia were also selected to participate but have since been promoted to Double A - Binghamton.

Eric Niesen, out of New Boston, MI, is in his third season of professional baseball. Niesen was a 3rd round pick in 2007 and will be making his first all-star game appearance. The 23 year old lefty is 3-2 with a 2.16 ERA on the season.

Catcher Francisco Pena is making his second all star game appearance. Playing for the Savannah Sand Gnats in 2008, Pena was voted to the South Atlantic League's All - Star team. The Dominican native was signed as a non-drafted free agent in 2006 and is the son of former major league player and manager, Tony Pena.

2008 first round draft pick, Reese Havens, is in his second season of professional baseball and will be participating in his first All - Star game. Havens attended the University of South Carolina and played for the Brooklyn Cyclones in 2008. Reese is currently the team leader in home runs (7), RBI (26) and walks (27).

Outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis is in his second season of professional baseball and will be participating in his first All - Star game. The California native attended Azusa Pacific University and was selected by the Mets in the third round of the 2008 draft. Kirk is currently the team leader in runs with 30 and tied for the team lead in home runs with seven.
