Daytona Tortugas News Release

The Daytona Cubs will have three representatives in the 2009 Florida State League All Star Game scheduled to be played in Fort Myers. Joining the three players will be former Daytona Cubs Manager Jody Davis. The three players that have been selected from the Cubs are shortstop Starlin Castro, catcher Robinson Chirinos, and starting pitcher Ryan Searle.

Starlin Castro is the youngest player on the Cubs roster, but has been a stalwart in the 2009 Daytona lineup. Castro has started 45 out of the 47 games played by the Cubs this season. Castro comes off a superb month of May where he hit .368 with 10 extra-base hits and 13 RBI.

Robinson Chirinos has been the best hitter in the Florida State League over the past four days and has provided much of the pop in the Cubs lineup over the first two months of the season. Chirinos hit two grand slams on May 31 against the Reds. He then followed it up with two more home runs on the very next day. Chirinos leads the team with a .350 batting average, seven home runs and 26 RBI.

The only pitcher selected from the Cubs is Australian right-hander Ryan Searle. The 19 year old has a 4-3 record with a 3.13 ERA. Searle has only allowed more then three runs in just one of his nine starts. He has pitched 46 innings and only given up 16 earned runs.

Joining the Cubs players will be Jody Davis who led the Daytona Cubs to the 2008 FSL Championship. Also heading to Fort Myers will be Cubs pitching coach Tom Pratt, hitting coach Richie Zisk, trainer Bob Grimes, and strength coach Steve Rassel.

The two teams atop the FSL standings had the most representatives to the respective teams as the Brevard County Manatees led all Northern Division teams with seven players selected and the Fort Myers Miracle led all Southern Division teams with seven players selected.
