Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

SIOUX CITY, Iowa. - The Sioux Falls Pheasants dropped their second straight game to the Sioux City Explorers on Friday night, losing a 5-1 contest in Sioux City.

The contest was a pitcher's duel for most of the game, as each team matched the other tit for tat through seven innings. The Pheasants drew first blood in the top of the fourth inning with Brandon Sing's leadoff home run, his league-leading 18th of the year. Sioux City responded with a run on the T.J. Bohn's double in the bottom half.

Each team had further opportunities with runners in scoring position during the middle innings, only to be denied by solid starting pitching. Kyle Ruwe provided a quality start for the Pheasants with one run, unearned, and seven hits allowed in 6 1/3 innings. He walked one and struck out two.

Sioux City finally broke the 1-1 tie with a four-run rally in the bottom of the eighth inning off Pheasants reliever Sam Walls (0-1). Brett Flowers led off the inning with a double and scored three batters later on Ryan Priddy's single. Brian Bistagne followed with an RBI single, and Priddy scored on a wild pitch coupled with a throwing error. Dustin Jones capped off the inning with a sacrifice fly.

Sioux City starter Nick Schumacher (5-4), the league's most recent Pitcher of the Week, went the distance with one run and seven hits allowed over nine innings. A devastating curveball helped fan seven Sioux Falls batters.

Wally Backman Jr. and Bistagne each had three hits for Sioux City. Sing had the only multi-hit performance for the Pheasants.

The Pheasants record fell to 23-30.

The finale of the home-and-home series returns to Sioux Falls Stadum at 2:05 p.m. on Saturday, July 9. It's a Grand Slam Saturday. A lucky fan will have the chance to win a brand new 2011 Ford Fusion SE from Sioux Falls ford. Gates open at 1 p.m.
