Saints lose a tough one 13-3 at hands of former pitcher

ST. PAUL, MN - It's one to forget if you are the St. Paul Saints as they fell 13-3 to the Gary SouthShore RailCats in the second game of a four game set at Midway Stadium on Saturday night in front of 5,452.

Matt Long squared off against former Saints pitcher Alain Quijano. Long got knocked around in the first as Mike Massaro doubled to left and then scored on Brad Boyer's two-run home run, his fifth of the year, to make it 2-0 RailCats. The onslaught would continue as Toddric Johnson hit his first home run of the year on a solo shot to right to put the RailCats up 3-0.

The Saints looked as if they would respond and keep it close when Adam Frost led off the bottom of the first with a double and Ronnie Bourquin singled to put runners on the corners with nobody out. The next batter Ole Sheldon's sacrifice fly scored Frost from third pulling the Saints within two runs of Gary 3-1.

In the sixth the RailCats exploded for three runs on the courtesy of Boyer's RBI single with runners on first and third which scored Mike Valadez from third to put the RailCats up 4-1. The next batter Cristian Guererro would clear the bases with a two-run double and the RailCats took a 6-1. Boyer had a great game for the RailCats and led the offensive charge going 4-5 with five RBI and two runs scored.

The RailCats would add three more runs in the top of the seventh to go up 9-1 before the Saints responded in the bottom of the seventh with two runs as Jonathan Van Every scored on a wild pitch to pull the Saints to within seven runs at 9-2. Bourquin would then score on Jason Cooper's RBI groundout to make the score 9-3. The RailCats would add four more runs in the top of the eighth to put the score at 13-3 where it would stay.

Quijano received the win for the RailCats in his first appearance at Midway Stadium with his new team. Quijano improved to 4-3 on the year pitching 6.0 innings allowing two runs on four hits while walking three and striking out two.

Long struggled in the first and sixth innings giving up three runs in each. Long went 6.0 innings allowing six runs on 10 hits while walking four and garnering two strikeouts. Long also gave up two home runs in the first inning en route to the loss which puts him at 6-4 on the year with a 4.71 ERA.

Bourquin was a bright spot for the Saints going 2-5 with a run scored. Bourquin extended his hitting streak to 12 games and has scored a run in 12 consecutive games as well, which doubles his previous career high. The hitting streak of 12 games is the third time Bourquin has achieved the feat in his career, second time this season

The Saints and RailCats will square off in game three of this four game series Saturday night at Midway Stadium. The Saints will send LHP Donald Brandt (5-2, 3.59 ERA) against LHP Carlos Rivas (2-0, 1.25 ERA) for the RailCats. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM as it is The Principal Financial Dreams Tour presented by the Principal Financial Group. The game can be heard live on Relevant Radio 1330.
