Late Rally Falls Short In 6-5 Loss

FARGO, N.D. - The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (24-28) were unable to complete the comeback as their late rally fell short in a 6-5 loss to the Winnipeg Goldeyes (31-20) on Friday night at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo, ND.
Oliver Odle struggled early on in his eleventh start of the year for the RedHawks giving up four runs in the first inning and a pair in the second inning. He gave up seven hits in those two innings but was able to settle down after that. Odle only allowed one more hit in his next 4.2 innings and had a stretch where he retired nine batters in a row.
The RedHawks started working on that 6-0 deficit in the bottom of the second inning in an effort to help out their starting pitcher. Kyle Nichols, in his first appearance as a RedHawk after being picked up in a trade with El Paso, blasted a solo home run to left field in front of the 4,740 fans in attendance.
The comeback was continued in the fourth inning as the Goldeyes made back-to-back errors to begin the inning and the RedHawks made them pay by scoring both Jesse Hoorelbeke and Nichols who had reached on those errors. The RedHawks cut the lead even further to 6-4 by scoring a run off three singles in the fifth inning.
Ian Thomas entered the game in relief for Isaac Hess for the Goldeyes in the fifth inning and was able stymie the RedHawk offense, pitching 2.2 innings and giving up only one hit.
The RedHawks were not done though as they mounted a last stand in the ninth inning against Goldeyes' closer, Jamie Vermilyea. Phil Britton led off the inning with a line drive home run down the left field line. Vermilyea picked up two ground ball outs before Carlo Cota reached base on single. Then, Nic Jackson stepped up to the plate as the game-winning run. Jackson hit a deep fly to left field, but it fell just short and was caught up against the wall to end the game.
With that final out, Vermilyea picked up his seventh save of the year and gave Thomas (5-2) his fifth win of the year. Odle (2-6) received the loss.
RedHawk hitters had a solid showing at the plate picking up a total of ten hits. Four different players had multi-hit nights and two had home runs, but they were unable to pick up the timely hits needed to complete the comeback.
Wes Long had a strong night at the plate for the Goldeyes going 3-for-4 with two runs batted in and a run scored. Brian Joynt scored a run as well and had a pair of doubles.
