Amarillo ThunderHeads News Release
AMARILLO, TX - The Amarillo Sox could get nothing going offensively against the Grand Prairie Airhogs starter Josh Rainwater while Sox pitchers couldn't stop Airhogs batters in a 14-2 loss in front of 2,159 fans at the Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium on Friday night.
Sox starter Ryan Mitchell (3-3) got the loss, allowing five runs off eight hits in five innings of work. Rainwater (9-2) took the outright lead in wins in the league, allowing just two runs off nine hits and walked just one to go with six strikeouts in the victory.
The Airhogs took a first inning lead on a two-run homerun by Greg Porter and extended the lead in the third. David Espinosa led off with a double, stole third and scored on a Porter RBI double, who would also score on a later Guillermo Martinez RBI single for a 4-0 lead.
Grand Prairie added another run in the fourth off an error and added four more in the sixth off five hits for a 9-0 advantage.
The Airhogs would not let up with three additional runs in the seventh, with two coming on a two-run homerun by David Thomas for a 12-run lead over the Sox. Two more runs in the eighth gave Grand Prairie their final total at 14-0.
The Sox finally got on the board in the ninth as Adam De La Garza singled and went to third on a Kevin Butler double. With runners on second and third, Jason White doubled to score both runners and end Rainwater's night. That would be all the Sox could get to fall to the Airhogs 14-2.
With the loss, the Sox fall to 27-25 while the Airhogs improve to 35-17. Saturday, Amarillo will take on Grand Prairie for the third game of a four-game set at 7:05pm with the Aqua One Pre-Game Show set to begin at 6:50pm. The game can be heard by visiting www.amarillosox.com via Ustream. Game time is tentative and is subject to blackout.
