Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts beat the Lincoln Saltdogs 9-1 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Friday night.
Junior Guerra pitched eight strong innings, allowing one earned run on just five hits to earn the victory. The Wingnuts' offense collected 12 hits and scored all nine of their runs with two outs.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the third, Jose Duran reached on an infield single into the hole at shortstop. Mike Conroy singled up the middle, and then Ryan Patterson drew a walk to load the bases with one out against Saltdogs' starter James Garcia. After Garcia struck out Brent Clevlen for the second out of the inning, Juan Richardson was hit by a pitch to force home the tying run. Jorge Delgado followed with a line drive single to left that scored Conroy and Patterson to give Wichita a 3-1 lead.
Delgado, who was celebrating his 31st birthday on Friday, finished the night with five RBI. Josh Workman finished the third-inning rally with a long double down the right field line that scored Richardson and Delgado.
The Wingnuts added four more in the bottom of the sixth against Lincoln's bullpen. Josh Horn and Duran drew back-to-back walks to open the inning. Reliever Sean Potter retired the next two hitters before Clevlen lined a single to right-center that scored Horn to make it 6-1. After Richardson walked to load the bases, Potter was relieved by Jordan Stern. On Stern's second pitch, Delgado doubled to the fence in right-center to clear the bases and break the game open at 9-1.
Guerra cruised after the Wingnuts took the lead, and did not allow a hit over the middle three innings. Guerra struck out seven and walked only one in the win.
Lincoln grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the top of the third when Phil Hawke singled home Blake Gailen with one out. Guerra prevented Lincoln from working a big inning by striking out Jeff Howell and Jorge Cortes back-to-back to end the inning and strand runners on the corners.
Garcia took the loss, allowing five earned runs on nine hits in five innings. Garcia walked one and struck out three.
Right-hander Matt Nevarez made his Wingnuts' debut in the top of the ninth, and recorded a scoreless inning with his fastball consistently sitting in the mid- to high-90's.
Nevarez was signed by the Wingnuts prior to the game. The 24-year old right-hander was with the Houston Astros' organization earlier this season, pitching for Double-A Corpus Christi in the Texas League. Nevarez was originally drafted by the Texas Rangers out of high school in 2005 in the 10th round. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound Nevarez was on Houston's 40-man roster last season. The Mission Hills, CA native has averaged 10.4 strikeouts per nine innings in six professional seasons.
The Wingnuts released right-hander Justin Murray to make room for Nevarez.
The Wingnuts and Saltdogs continue their series on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. Ryan Hinson faces right-hander Alessandro Maestri. For tickets, call the Wingnuts' office at (316) 264-NUTS or visit the Wingnuts' official website at www.wichitawingnuts.com.
