Sioux Falls, SD-----The Explorers hung on for a 9-7 win here Thursday at Sioux Falls Stadium over the Pheasants in the first game of a three-game series.

The X's had taken a 4-0 lead with two runs in the top of the third inning only to have Sioux Falls tie the game at 4-4 on a two-run home run by Brandon Sing in the bottom of the fourth. The game remained tied until Derek Schermerhorn led off the sixth inning with his second home run of the season to give the Explorers a 5-4 lead. It was Schermerhorn's third hit of the game. The Explorers maintained a one-run lead until the top of the ninth inning when the visitors scored four runs, two of which came on a two-run home run by Kent Sakamoto, his third hit of the contest.

The Explorers would need those insurance runs as Sioux Falls scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning and had the tying run on base against Explorers closer Eddie Delacruz. Matt Gibbs, in relief of starter Jason Jarvis pitched four-innings of one-hit ball to pick up his fifth win of the year. In the victory, Sioux City had 17 hits against four Pheasants pitchers.

The second game of the three-game series will be Friday at Lewis and Clark Park with game time set for 7:05. Reserve your seats now by calling 712-277-9467!
