The Myrtle Beach Pelicans wrapped up their impressive month of August with a win in Tuesday's series opener with the Lynchburg Hillcats 5-3. It was the 16th victory out of 26 games played in the month, as the Birds improved to 52-51. The Hillcats dropped to a 50-53 record with the setback.

Myrtle Beach knocked just one extra-base hit from Jordan Nwogu's solo home run (2-3, HR, RBI) out of 11 base hits on the evening. Jonathan Sierra (2-4, RBI) and Peter Matt (2-3, RBI) both brought home runs with singles in the sixth. Ethan Hearn (0-2, RBI) also drove in a run on a sacrifice fly in the second.

Jose Almonte (3-2) logged a fantastic outing with three no-hit innings while adding two strikeouts. Jarod Wright picked up his second save of the year with just one hit allowed through the final 1 1/3 innings. Richard Gallardo started and lasted 4 2/3 innings with seven hits sacrificed and three earned runs.

The visitors totaled eight hits with just three runs to show for it. Alexfri Planez (3-4) led the team in hits while Petey Halpin (1-4, RBI) and Korey Holland (1-4, RBI) both collected RBIs on singles.

Lynchburg tossed out four different pitchers with Daritzon Feliz (4-3) taking the loss after failing to get an out and giving up three earned runs off two hits and two walks. Brauny Munoz started the game and was solid through his five innings, allowing seven hits but just one earned run and eight strikeouts.

Both teams got on the board in the second inning as the Hillcats started the top half with an infield single from Planez. Micael Ramirez grounded into a force out at second while he reached first. Ramirez moved to second on a single to left from Jorge Burgos with one out. After the next batter struck out, Hollard knocked in Ramirez on a single up the middle to give Lynchburg an early lead.

Myrtle Beach responded with back-to-back singles from Owen Caissie and Sierra while Matt drew a walk to load the bases. Hearn came up and hit a sacrifice fly to center as Caissie came home while Sierra was tagged out trying to reach third for a double play.

The Hillcats took the lead back with a two-run fifth as Yordys Valdez led off with a double on a grounder to center. He scored one batter later on a single to center from Halpin to make it 2-1 Hillcats. Halpin scored from second on a groundout by Angel Martinez to give Lynchburg a two-run lead.

The Pelicans responded in the bottom of the sixth as Feliz came on in relief for Munoz. Nwogu and Caissie drew walks to start off and Sierra grounded a ball to right field to bring in Nwogu as Caissie got to third. Feliz threw a wild pitch that scored Caissie and evened the game up at three. The big hit came from Matt on a grounder up the middle that scored Sierra to push the Pelicans in front 4-3.

Almonte held things down out of the bullpen for Myrtle Beach as Nwogu hit his first home run of the month in the bottom of the seventh to left field to extend the Myrtle Beach lead to 5-3.

The Pelicans will take on the Hillcats in game two of the series on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m.
