Silvertips Stifle S'toon in 3-0 Shutout
October 25, 2018 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Saskatoon Blades News Release
Saskatoon, SK -- The Saskatoon Blades fell victim to a stingy Everett Silvertips team on Wednesday night at SaskTel Centre resulting in a 3-0 loss. It was just the second regulation loss of the season on home ice for the blue & gold, who now sit at 8-4-1-0 on the year.
Akash Bains opened the scoring with what would eventually be the game winner just past the midway point of the first period. It was the only goal of the hockey game through the first 40 minutes.
During the second period Riley McKay tried to inject some energy into the home side with a fight against Dawson Butt. The two combatants duked it just inside the Blades blue line before falling to the ice with McKay getting the upper hand.
Saskatoon's offense wasn't finding much success against the smothering play of the Silvertips in all three zones. Then a fluke shot off the goal line early in the third period gave the visitors a 2-0 lead. Typically an achievable feat for this year's Blades, the comeback seemed less likely as the final period progressed. Everett defenseman Sahvan Khaira took a 4-minute high-sticking penalty 6:57 into the third, but the Blades man advantage only mustered one shot on goal.
Riley Sutter delivered the final dagger with an empty goal in the final moments of the game to close out the evening.
Nolan Maier had a strong outing making 28 saves on 30 shots while his counterpart and fellow 17-year-old netminder Dustin Wolf made 23 saves for his first shutout of the season.
Next up for the Blades is a gruelling 3-in-3 road trip through Alberta beginning Friday in Red Deer, a trip to Edmonton on Saturday, and closing out against the Hitmen on Sunday in Calgary. Saskatoon then returns to SaskTel Centre next Thursday to host the Kootenay ICE.
