Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Juan Silverio's first inning grand slam was all Winston-Salem needed to best Frederick on Friday night at BB&T Ballpark, but the offense piled on and won 10-0. The win was the second straight shutout victory by double-digit runs, and was also the Dash's ninth in the last ten games.
Keys starter Nathan Moreau struggled with control in the first inning and Winston-Salem took advantage. Moreau walked Tyler Saladino, Brady Shoemaker, and Ian Gac to load the bases with one out. Andy Wilkins, in his first game since July 28, struck out looking before Silverio belted a grand slam to put the Dash up 4-0.
From there it was clear sailing for Winston-Salem behind starter Joe Serafin, who set the Keys (25-15, 66-43) down with relative ease in his start. The offense didn't stop after the four-run first, though. In the third, Gac added his league-leading 28th home run.
Winston (23-16, 55-54) put the game out of reach in the sixth inning. Gac and Wilkins singled with one out, and Silverio reached on catcher's interference to load the bases. Kyle Colligan then doubled home Gac and Wilkins, and Mike Blanke singled in Silverio and Colligan to put Winston up 9-0. Daniel Wagner then reached on a fielder's choice error on Manny Machado before Saladino walked to load the bases. Jared Mitchell followed and walked against reliever Chris Petrini to drive home the tenth Winston run.
Serafin (4-8) didn't allow a run in six innings and picked up his fourth win of the season. Justin Cassel made his first appearance since May 8, 2010 and threw two scoreless innings and struck out one. Ryan Kussmaul struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning to maintain the second straight shutout. Moreau (10-9) was hit with the loss after allowing nine runs (eight earned) in 5.1 innings.
Winston-Salem kept the lead in the southern division at two games because of a Kinston win over Salem.
