Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

RHP Adam Olbrychowski (3-6, 5.03) at RHP Kennil Gomez (2-1, 3.57)

CATCHING UP: Five Pelicans from the last two seasons were dealt in trade deadline deals on Sunday. 2011 Myrtle Beach Opening Day rotation mates Joe Wieland and Robbie Erlin went to the San Diego Padres in the Rangers' deal for reliever Mike Adams while 2010 Birds Paul Clemens, Brett Oberholtzer, and Juan Abreu also traded uniforms, going to the Houston Astros organization in the Braves' deal for Michael Bourn. In an odd twist, starters Clemens and Wieland made their debuts for their new teams against each other last night in San Antonio. For the host Missions, Wieland held Corpus Christi to one run on three hits, striking out seven without walking a batter. Clemens allowed only an unearned run on two hits for the Hooks, walking five and striking out seven. Both pitchers left after six innings in a 1-1 game. San Antonio broke the tie with five runs in the bottom of the eighth to pull out a 6-1 win.

CATCHING UP SOME MORE: With Wieland and Erlin leaving the Rangers' organization, it created an opening in Double-A Frisco's rotation. Robbie Ross got the well-deserved call-up, and made his first start for the RoughRiders last night at Midland. The lefty allowed three runs on six hits in six innings, walking one and striking out six, but he was outdueled by Gary Daley and took a 3-1 loss. The other open spot for the 'Riders will be taken by Pelicans Opening Day starter Neil Ramirez. After a strong outing in the Birds' opener, the righty was called up to Triple-A Round Rock, where he went 4-3 with a 3.68 ERA in 17 starts.

TOP TEN LIST: Tonight's game will feature five players that rank in the Carolina League's top ten in batting average. Jared Bolden (.282) and Santiago Chirino (.280) of the Pelicans rank fifth and seventh, respectively. Three Nationals round out the top ten with Destin Hood (.279, 8th), Jeff Kobernus (.275, 9th) and Justin Bloxom (.272, 10th). The next two batters on the qualifiers list are also in the series, Eury Perez of Potomac ranks 11th at .271 and Myrtle Beach's Jared Prince is percentage points behind him in 12th place.

MARCH OF THE PAIN-GUINS: With a hit-by-pitch on Tuesday and Wednesday, Pelicans outfielder Jared Prince continues his charge to Carolina League history. Last year, Winston-Salem first baseman/DH Seth Loman obliterated a 22-year-old league record by getting plunked by 30 pitches over the course of his season, passing the mark of 24 established by former Winston-Salem Spirit Rusty Crockett in 1988. After being hit just three times in the first two months of the season, Prince passed Crockett's number Wednesday with his 25th HBP of the year and 22nd since the start of June. The Kingston, Washington native and Washington State University product's collegiate coaching staff used to pull players who avoided pitches, thus learning his black-and-blue skill set in the Pac-10 Conference. He's got the bruises to show for it, but in toughing it out, Prince has climbed atop the Carolina League in on base percentage, reaching at a .376 clip.
