Nationals sour Cowboy Monkey Rodeo by handing Birds 6-1 loss
August 5, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans have had an up-and-down second half and the downward trend continued on Friday against the Potomac Nationals. Two defensive miscues by Leury Garcia opened the door for a three-run second inning and the Birds' offense could not get anything going against Adam Olbrychowski in a 6-1 series-opening defeat at BB&T Coastal Field.
Spot starter Kennil Gomez retired the first four batters he faced, but ran into trouble in the second with a Steven Souza walk and a Travis Walters double. Gomez struck out Brian Peacock for the second out and induced a grounder from Cutter Dykstra that seemed like it would end the inning.
The shortstop Garcia fielded it cleanly, but he couldn't get the throw off cleanly and Dykstra beat it out for an infield single to plate Souza with the game's first run. Eury Perez followed with another grounder that appeared to be the inning's final out, but Garcia threw wide of first for an E-6 that brought home Walters for a second run. Francisco Soriano singled to score Dykstra for the third and final run of the frame.
Gomez (2-2) took the tough loss in allowing three runs, only one earned, in five innings of work. The P-Nats scored two more runs in the sixth one in the seventh against reliever Kasey Kiker.
There was more than enough support for Olbrychowski (4-6), who despite allowing 14 runs over his previous 13 and one-third innings against the Pelicans in six outings this season, was brilliant on this night. The righty went eight innings for the first time in his professional career, allowing one run on three hits, walking three and striking out six.
The only Myrtle Beach run came across in the sixth when Jared Hoying walked and scored on David Paisano's triple.
The late innings brought the Carolina League debut of right-hander Colby Killian, called up to the Pelicans from low-A Hickory on Wednesday. He went five-up five-down in recording the last two outs of the seventh and a 1-2-3 eighth with two strikeouts.
Potomac reliever Mitchell Clegg put the Pelicans down quickly in the ninth, sending the Birds to their third straight home loss for only the second time in 2011. The P-Nats handed the Pelicans defeats in Myrtle Beach April 27 and 28 and Frederick beat the Birds the next night. In addition to the three-game losing streak the Pelicans have now dropped five of six.
The series continues on Saturday night as southpaw Miguel De Los Santos (2-3, 3.64) goes for the Birds against righty Erik Davis, who makes his first start for the P-Nats after being transferred from Double-A Harrisburg. First pitch at BB&T Coastal Field is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Tickets for all Pelicans home games, including the postseason, are available at the BB&T Coastal Field box office, MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, and by phone at 843-918-6000 or 877-918-TIXX.
