GREENSBORO, N.C.-Former Kinston outfielder Abner Abreu was voted the Carolina League's Topps Player of the Month for July in a poll of the managers. Abreu was traded July 28 to the Cubs as part of the deal that brought Kosuke Fukudome to Cleveland.
In 21 July games, the right-handed hitting outfielder batted .352 (25 for 71), with eight home runs and 17 RBI. Four doubles and three triples helped swell his slugging percentage to a league-best .831. Cumulatively for the season, which includes five games for the Daytona Cubs of the Florida State League, the 21-year old is batting .246 with 12 home runs, 36 RBI and 19 stolen bases.
Abreu was signed by the Indians in October of 2006 out of San Pedro de Macoris, in the Dominican Republic. This season was his second in Kinston. In 2010 he batted .305 for the K-Tribe, with four home runs and 58 RBI.
