South Bend, Ind . - A furious ninth inning rally by the Lansing Lugnuts fell just short, as South Bend held on for a 10-8 win on Sunday afternoon at Coveleski Stadium.
Trailing 10-4 in the ninth, Lansing began the comeback when Cory Patton doubled to right-center field to plate Anthony Garibaldi that cut the lead to 10-5. Joey Metropoulos then doubled to score Patton to make the score 10-6. After David Hicks walked, Anthony Hatch doubled to left field to score both Metropoulos and Patton to make the score 10-8. However the rally fell short when Vincent Bongiavanni nailed down the save by fanning the final two batters of the game.
The Lugnuts trailed the SilverHawks in the fifth when South Bend exploded for seven runs. Trey Hendricks single home Leyson Septimo to push the lead to 4-2. After a Will Crouch single loaded the bases, Orlando Mercado and Steve Mena drew back-to-back walks to make the game 6-2. Manny Ferrer stepped up next and blasted a grand slam over the left-center field wall to extend the lead to 10-2. Ferrer finished the game 3-for-4 with five RBI.
Lansing took the lead in the first inning when Jacob Butler doubled down the left field line to make the score 1-0. However South Bend would tie the game in the bottom of the inning when Bryan Byrne doubled to plate Septimo.
Lansing used four pitchers in the game, including David Hicks, who made his first appearance as a pitcher since 2003 while playing for North Carolina State. Hicks, who started the game at first base, threw a perfect eighth in his outing.
Adam Howard (2-1) picked up the win for the SilverHawks, tossing seven innings while surrendering two runs on seven hits.
Jordan Timm (2-1) suffered the loss, allowing 10 hits and seven runs in 4 1/3 innings. Only six of the runs were earned.
