Kane County Cougars News Release

Geneva, IL - Held to two hits and five base runners through eight innings against the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays on Sunday night, the Kane County Cougars rallied for four runs in the ninth before coming up short in a 6-4 defeat in front of 5,770 fans at Elfstrom Stadium. Jeff Baisley's three-run home run highlighted the comeback. The Devil Rays built their lead early against Lansford with one tally in each of the first two frames. The 19-year-old then settled down to retire 10 consecutive hitters before more problems in the fifth. With two outs, Lansford allowed two hits, walked two and hit a pair of batters for a 6-0 score by the end of the inning. T.J. Franco finished the frame and totaled 1 2/3 innings, Ron Madej pitched the same amount and John Herrera worked a scoreless ninth to give the Cougars a chance. Nick Blasi singled off reliever Aaron Walker to start the last of the ninth, and Steve Kleen walked to set the table for Baisley's long three-run home run to left field that cut the score in half, 6-3. Anthony Recker poked a one-out double, and D-Rays closer Greg Dupas replaced Walker. Recker later scored on a wild pitch after Isaac Omura's single, but the Cougars couldn't tie the game. Drew Bigda (1-1) claimed the win for the visitors, while Lansford (4-3) has lost consecutive starts for the first time this season. Dupas notched his 15th save. The Cougars (34-22), still in first place by three games after Peoria's loss to Fort Wayne, can win the series Monday night in the finale. Vince Mazzaro (5-4, 5.29) will face left-hander Mike Wlodarczyk (5-2, 1.65) of the Devil Rays (27-29).
