Lugnuts Take 17 Inning Classic

South Bend, Ind . - For the second time this season, the Lansing Lugnuts became involved in a 17 inning marathon. For the second time this season, the Lugnuts came out on top. Lansing plated two runs in the top half of the 17th inning, outlasting the South Bend SilverHawks in a 5-3 win on Friday night after 4 hours and 36 minutes.

With runners at first and second and two outs, Jacob Bulter lifted a triple to right-center field to plate both David Hicks and Sean Shoffit to give Lansing the go-ahead runs.

Lansing had taken the lead in the 15th inning when David Hicks blasted a solo homer to right field to make the score 3-2. However South Bend tied the game in the bottom of the inning after Will Crouch singled to left-center field to plate Greg Thomson. After two intentional walks, Pedro Ciriaco grounded into a 6-2-3 double play to end the inning.

South Bend had another chance in the 16th against Adrian Martin when they had again had the bases loaded with one out. Donald Julio, a relief pitcher who was forced to hit after Crouch moved from the designated hitter's spot to left field, grounded into an inning ending 3-2-3 double play that kept the Lugnuts alive.

Lansing led in the seventh inning when Jesus Gonzalez lifted a sacrifice fly into center field to plate Hicks. That gave the Lugnuts a 2-1 lead.

The SilverHawks tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh when Manny Ferrer reached and scored on back-to-back passed balls.

Each team used five pitchers in the contest. Adrian Martin received the win for Lansing by throwing the final four frames, surrendering three hits and allowing one run.

Donald Julio took the loss for the SilverHawks, tossing four innings and allowing three runs, only one which was earned.

Lansing (34-20) and South Bend (26-27) will turn around and play game three of the series Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m.
