Burlington Bees News Release

Cedar Rapids, IA (June 4, 2006) Burlington Bees RHP Matt Kniginyzky had won five straight starts and went to the mound today against Cedar Rapids Kernels RHP Nick Adenhart who was leading the Midwest League in wins, ranked second in ERA, and third in strikeouts. Someone forgot to tell the hitters who they were facing. The Bees (28-26) scored nine runs in the first two innings to knock Adenhart out of the game and went on to beat the Kernels (26-31) 13-4 at Veterans Memorial Stadium this afternoon. The Bees matched their season-highs with 13 runs and 18 hits to take a 2-1 lead in this series.

The Bees started immediately against Adenhart. Josh Johnson led off the game with a single and with one out Jeremy Jirschele was hit by a pitch. Adenhart threw the ball into centerfield trying to pickoff Johnson at second allowing the runners to advance to second and third and Miguel Vega drove both of them in with a single to center for a 2-0 lead. Vega went to second on the throw to the plate, to third on a groundout, and scored on a two-out single by Carlos Arroyo. In the second, JP Lowen singled and went to second as the ball skipped past Tyler Johnson in left for an error. After a walk to Ethien Santana, Adenhart threw another ball into center on a pickoff attempt and the runners moved up to second and third. Johnson lined his second hit to drive in Lowen and then Adenhart threw one in the dirt at first trying to get Johnson, allowing Santana to score and Johnson to go to second as the Bees extended the lead to 5-0. Valentino Arce singled to move Johnson to third. After a popout, Vega drove in Johnson wit a sacrifice fly to center to make it 6-0 and singles by Brady Everett and Arroyo brought in Arce for a 7-0 lead. With runners on the corners, catcher Brett Ma Brett Martinez tried to pick off Arroyo at first, but threw the ball wide and it went off of Arroyos leg and into the Kernels dugout allowing Everett to score and Arroyo to go to third. Jose Duarte singled to drive in Arroyo and complete the six-run inning that gave the Bees a 9-0 advantage. Seven of the runs were earned against Adenhart despite five errors, including three on the pitcher. Adenhart (7-2) came out after the second inning.

Kniginyzky, who has been battling the flu and a fever, struggled with his command. In the bottom of the second, Jordan Renz led off with a solo homer to left, Flint Wipke doubled, and Mark Trumbo smacked a two-run homer to cut the lead to 9-3. In the fourth, Dallas Morris doubled and scored on a two-out single by Wipke to make it 9-4. Kniginyzky wouldnt allow any more runs, but a walk to Martinez with two outs in the fifth loaded the bases and brought his pitch count to 97, forcing the staff to remove him one out shy of qualifying for the win. Rayner Oliveros (3-2) came in and got Johnson to ground out and worked through the eighth without allowing a run for the win. Eliezer Garcia finished with a scoreless ninth.

Chris Howell pitched four innings in relief of Adenhart and allowed a solo homer to Everett in the fourth and in the fifth, Lowen doubled and scored on a single by Santana to extend the lead to 11-4. The Bees capped the scoring with two runs against Brad Beck in the seventh on an RBI single by Lowen and an RBI double by Santana that drove in Arroyo and Duarte respectively. Lowen finished 4-5 and is the first Bees to record four hits in a game this year. Everett and Arroyo finished with three hits apiece. Every starter scored at least once.

The Bees and Kernels finish this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at Veterans Memorial Stadium. RH Carlos Rosa (5-3, 2.41) will start for the Bees against RH Stephen Marek (6-1, 2.30) for the Kernels. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40. Peoria lost to Ft. Wayne this afternoon, so the Bees will start play tomorrow two games behind the Chiefs for a playoff spot with 13 games left before the All-Star Break.
