LumberKings Rattled on the Road Again

June 4, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Clinton LumberKings News Release

Appleton, IA - For the second straight night, the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers shoved the Clinton LumberKings another game further into last place with a 7-2 win before 5,010 fans at Fox Cities Stadium. A strong outing by lefthander Paul Fagan shut down the bats of the LumberKings, and the Timber Rattlers capitalized on the struggles of starter Juan Jimenez to win game two of the four-game series.

Fagan (W, 2-5) pitched his way out of a jam in the first inning, but didn't allow a run until the sixth. After giving up two walks to start the inning, he allowed an RBI groundout by John Whittleman, followed shortly thereafter by a flare single off the bat of Brian Valichka to plate the second and final run. Fagan surrendered just those two runs on five hits through six innings, walking three and striking out five in the process.

Jimenez (L, 1-2) pitched just two innings for the LumberKings, giving up four earned runs on five hits. He was yanked in the third inning without retiring a batter.

A tense moment occurred in the bottom of the fifth, as L-Kings reliever Gerry Oakes and Timber Rattlers centerfielder Mike Saunders got caught up in a heated exchange after Saunders scored on a two-out single by Jeff Flaig. Both benches and bullpens cleared, but no altercations or ejections ensued.

Casey Craig and Nick Prosise each had three-hit nights to lead the Timber Rattlers. Both had a pair of RBI's as well. Jose Vallejo was the leading hitter of the night for the LumberKings, going 2-for-4.

The loss separates the LumberKings (19-36) and Timber Rattlers (22-33) by another game, as Wisconsin is now three games ahead of Clinton for seventh in the Midwest League West. The series continues tomorrow afternoon at Fox Cities Stadium, first pitch scheduled for 1:05 pm. Listen to the game on AM 1340 KROS in Clinton, or live on the web at www.lumberkings.com.
