Swing cruise to sixth straight

June 4, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Swing jumped on top early and never looked back Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Ballpark, downing the West Michigan Whitecaps, 6-0. A five-run explosion in the second inning set the tone early, as Adam Daniels and the Swing bullpen held the Whitecaps to just four hits - two in the first, two in the ninth, and nothing in between.

Quad Cities (26-28) has reeled off six consecutive victories for the first time this year, improving to 16-11 on the road and 6-1 on the current eight-game road trip. West Michigan (32-22) has dropped four in a row for the first time this season.

Daniels (2-4) snapped a personal four-game skid with an impressive two-hit showing. The southpaw tied career-highs with seven strikeouts in seven innings, allowing just three baserunners on three walks after the first inning. Following consecutive singles in the opening frame, Daniels retired 10 Whitecaps in a row and did not find himself in a jam again.

West Michigan tested Daniels early by placing men at second and third with only one out in the bottom of the first, but the southpaw from Vancouver, Canada was up to the task. Already with one strikeout in the inning, Daniels fanned Justin Justice swinging and Jeramy Laster looking to strikeout the side and strand a pair of Whitecaps baserunners in scoring position.

For the second straight game, getting out of a jam in the bottom of the first led to momentum for the Swing in the top of the second. Randy Roth led off with a single and moved to second base as Bryan Anderson reached on an error by Will Rhymes. That is when Whitecaps' starter Sendy Vasquez got wild. With one out he walked Luis Cotto to load the bases and issued another free pass to Henry Guerrero that gave Quad Cities a 1-0 lead. After falling behind with a 2-0 count to Simon Williams, the Swing left fielder plastered the next pitch into left-center and cleared the bases with a three-run double. He came home to score on a two-out single by Casey Rowlett later in the frame, spotting the Swing a 5-0 lead.

Quad Cities added a run in the third for the 6-0 advantage. Anderson doubled with one away, and scored on a two-out single by Cotto. Anderson continued his torrid pace in a series that has seen him go 7-for-13 with two doubles, three runs scored, and two driven in to raise his batting average to a team-high .333.

The Swing were flashing the leather again Sunday, and will look to complete their first errorless series of the year on Monday. In the seventh inning Jose Martinez continued to amaze with his glove, laying out with full extension to make a diving grab on a line drive up the middle by Cory Middleton. One inning later it was Daniel Nelson doing the job at third base when a hot smash took a bad hop and bounced towards his head. The utility infielder showed quick hands in snagging it with his glove while jerking out of the way, and turned the hard-hit ball into a 5-4-3 inning-ending double play.

The Quad Cities bullpen continued its impressive series as well, as Ashley Hooks and Matt Trent each tossed a scoreless inning. The Swing relief corps has thrown nine innings without allowing a run in the series.

Vasquez (3-4) took the loss for West Michigan, allowing six runs - five earned - on eight hits and three walks while striking out six in 5.1 innings.
