Sibrian, Nicasia & Avina Power Mudcats to 12-3 Victory

ZEBULON, N.C. - Jose Sibrian drove in four runs, Kay-Lan Nicasia hit a two-run homer and leadoff man Jace Avina hit a solo home run while reaching base five times as the first-place Carolina Mudcats won their sixth straight game 12-3 versus the Delmarva Shorebirds on Thursday night at Five County Stadium.
The Shorebirds (15-23, 43-60) originally led 1-0 in the first after Enrique Bradfield Jr. reached on an infield single before scoring in the opening frame off starter Patricio Aquino. The Mudcats (26-13, 59-43), however, came back to take a 3-1 lead with Nicasia's, two-out, two-run homer in the second and Avina's leadoff homer in the third. Avina's home run was his team leading 12th of the season.
Noelberth Romero homered in the fourth to cut the Carolina lead to 3-2, but Sibrian answered with a two-run double in the fifth to lift the red-hot Mudcats to a 5-2 lead. Delmarva brought across one more in the sixth to cut the deficit to 5-3, but the Mudcats broke the game open with five runs on three straight bases loaded walks and Sibrian's two-run single in the fifth to go up 10-3.
Sibrian led the way at the plate while going 3-for-4 with a double and four RBI (one shy of a season and career high). Avina went 2-for-2 with two runs, a home run, a RBI and three walks. Nicasia also scored twice while going 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBI.
Reliever Jeison Pena took over for Aquino in the fifth and earned the win while leaving two inherited runners on and holding the Shorebirds scoreless. Pena (W, 5-2) walked one and struck out two while facing four batters in the fifth. Carolina led 3-2 through the top of the fifth following Pena's clutch appearance and went on to outscore the Shorebirds 9-1 the rest of the way.
Aquino went four plus while going into the fifth in his start. He started out with five strikeouts over the first two innings, but escaped trouble in the third and fourth before leaving early in the fifth. After Pena finished the fifth in place of Aquino, relievers Yujanyer Herrera and Tyler Wehrle took it the rest of the way with Herrera allowing an unearned run over three innings and Wehrle striking out two in the ninth.
Yaqui Rivera started for the Shorebirds and took the loss after allowing three runs on two hits over two and 2/3 innings. Rivera (L, 1-5) also walked three and struck out one. Reliever Juan Rojas followed and went on to walk four, total two strikeouts and allow six runs on four hits over two and 2/3. Reliever Cesar Alvarez also allowed four hits, but gave up three runs, walked three and struck out one.
The victory gave the Mudcats a 3-0 lead in the six-game home series. Carolina will next go for the series win and their seventh straight victory overall on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. at Five County Stadium. Right-hander Will Rudy is scheduled to start in Friday's CBS 17 Friday Night Fireworks game in Zebulon.
