Schaumburg Boomers News Release
AVON, Ohio - The Schaumburg Boomers officially opened the first season in franchise history in grand fashion, securing a 4-0 shutout of the Lake Erie Crushers, a 2011 playoff team, on the road Friday night.
The Boomers opened the scoring in the top of the first. With two outs Gerard Hall poked the first hit in franchise history with a single to right. Frank Pfister followed with a single and Nate Baumann put the Boomers on the board by singling on the first pitch of his professional career. The single plated Hall with the first run in franchise history. Schaumburg added an unearned run in the third when Pfister reached on a two-base error and jogged in to score on a wild pitch.
Schaumburg padded the lead with a couple runs in the fifth. Chad Mozingo led off by being hit by a pitch and moved to third on a failed pickoff. Newcomer Jereme Milons, a former Crusher, recorded the first extra-base hit in franchise history with a double to center, scoring Mozingo. Milons moved to third on a wild pitch and Hall lifted a sacrifice fly to cap the scoring.
Lake Erie's bullpen kept the Boomer bats at bay the rest of the way, but Schaumburg's pitching was also strong. Robby Donovan struck out the side in the bottom of the first inning and allowed just two hits in five shutout innings while striking out five. Dave Whigham struck out three in two blank frames while Alex Thieroff fanned a pair in a perfect eighth and Jason Braun shut the door on the victory with a scoreless ninth.
The season opening series will continue tomorrow night at 6:05 p.m. CDT. LHP Cameron Roth (0-0, 0.00) starts for the Boomers against RHP Eric Gonzalez-Diaz (0-0, 0.00).
