CornBelters win 5-1 over Windy City

NORMAL - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, exploded for four runs in the second inning on the way to a 5-1 win over the Windy City ThunderBolts to open the 2012 season on Friday night at the Corn Crib.

The CornBelters opened the scoring in the second inning when Sam Judah was hit by a pitch with one out. Robert Brooks walked and Bobby Rinard reached via error to load the bases, and Alvaro Ramirez singled in Judah and Brooks. Ramirez moved to third on a pair of wild pitches which also scored Rinard, and Steven Felix pushed Ramirez home with a two-out single to put the Belters up 4-0 after two innings.

The ThunderBolts scored in the sixth when Chris Wade led off with a single and scored after a single and a fielder's choice.

Normal added to the lead in the seventh when Alvaro Ramirez singled up the middle, went to second on a wild pitch and to third on a fielder's choice. Ramirez scored on a squeeze bunt by Steven Felix to increase the Belters lead to 5-1.

Tyler Lavigne earned the win with a five-inning outing, giving up no runs on three hits while walking one and striking out two. Windy City starter Dustin Williams took the loss.

Game two of the opening series is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the Corn Crib as left-hander Tyler Stovall takes the ball for the CornBelters against right-handed Windy City starter Mike Recchia.
