Rippers Drop Season Opener

May 18, 2012 - Frontier League (FL)
London Rippers News Release

MARION, ILLINOIS - The pre- game excitement didn't equate to runs as the London

Rippers were shut out by the Southern Illinois Miners, 7-0.

The Rippers were playing in their first game in franchise history and thus, many

franchise firsts

- including the first batter (Justino Cuevas), first pitcher (Sheng-An

Kuo) and first hit (Stephen Cardullo).

Unfortunately, the first run and first win will have to wait for another game.

David Harden started the game for the Miners and went 6 strong innings, striking out

four and giving up only 1 hit. He had five 3 up-3 down innings and at one point, had

retired 13 in a row.

Rippers

'

starter, Sheng-An Kuo, was just as effective, throwing 5 innings, while giving

up only two runs (one earned) on two hits and striking out four.

Miner's first baseman,

Matt Fields, hit his first home run of the season in the bottom of

the 4th for the only earned run against Kuo.

The Miners scored single runs in the first, fourth and sixth and then exploded for four

runs in the bottom of the 8th , all with two outs, off Rob Chamra on a two run double by

Carlos Mendez, followed by a two run single by Ken Gregory, making it 7-0 Miners.

London only mustered three hits in the game, one each by Cardullo, Joash Brodin and

Cuevas.

These two teams meet up again tomorrow night, with Canadian, Jamie Richmond on

the mound for the Rippers. Gametime is 7:05pm.
