Rockford RiverHawks News Release
O'FALLON, Mo. - Four River City pitchers combined on a five-hitter on Friday as the Rascals shut out the Rockford RiverHawks, 4-0, in the season opener at T.R. Hughes Ballpark.
Josh Workman and Bobby Burk hit home runs for the Rascals. Workman broke a scoreless tie with a two-out homer over the Big Dog Wall off Rockford starter Alex Szymanski in the fourth inning.
Szymanski struck out the side in the following inning and held the Rascals to a run on four hits over 5 1/3 innings, but took the loss. Szymanski finished with seven strikeouts.
The Rascals also scored on a Eric Williams RBI single in the seventh inning and Burk's two-run homer in the eighth.
River City starter Brad Stillings held Rockford to a hit over five innings and earned the win. He struck out five and walked two.
The RiverHawks reached scoring position just four times. They left a runner at third base in the eighth inning and two in scoring position in the ninth. In the ninth, singles by Devin Shepherd and Evan Button and an error gave the RiverHawks an opportunity, but River City reliever Dustin Umberger struck out the next three to end the game.
The RiverHawks were shut out in a season opener for the first time since May 29, 2002, when the Rascals blanked them, 5-0, at Marinelli Field.
The series continues at 7:05 p.m. Saturday.
The RiverHawks' home opener is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Friday, May 25 against Lake Erie. The Power Connection sponsors a postgame fireworks extravaganza.
