Otters' Comeback Falls Short in Opening Day Loss

(EVANSVILLE, Indiana) The Evansville Otters nearly erased a three run deficit but fell a little short on Opening Night 4-3 against the Washington Wild Things.

Evansville and Washington played six scoreless innings to start the game before Washington scored a trifecta of runs in the seventh inning.

The Otters were forced to come back during the rest of the game and entered the last of the ninth inning down 4-1.

Evansville loaded the bases with no one out, scoring a run on a sacrifice fly from Alex Foltz and an additional score on an RBI groundout by Frank Martinez. With two outs and the tying run at third, Nick Schwaner hit a long fly ball to the warning track in the right-center field gap. Allen Boyer then raced over and made a sliding catch from center field to secure the Washington win.

With the victory, the Wild Things imrove to 1-0 on the season as Evansville currently stands at 0-1.

Starting pitcher Dan Blewett threw six shutout innings for the Otters in the loss, striking out a total of eight batters. Outfielder Matt Sheely also collected three hits for Evansville in the defeat.

There were 3,353 fans in attendance to witness the game at Historic Bosse Field.

The winning pitcher is Justin Hall, who also pitched six scoreless innings for Washington. Reliever Cory Trudell takes the loss for Evansville after allowing three runs in 2/3 of an inning. Closer Nick Cicio recorded his first save of the season, getting the last four outs for the Wild Things, leaving the tying run on base.

Evansville and Washington continue the series on Saturday night with a 6:35 p.m. first pitch. It is Evansville Teachers Federal Credit Union Customer Appreciation Night at the ballpark. Left-hander Matt Crim will make his first start of the season for the Otters as he will be opposed by righty Jhonny Montoya of the Wild Things.
