Beloit Sky Carp News Release
BELOIT, WI - Andres Avila reeled off six scoreless innings and the Beloit Snappers went on to top the Clinton LumberKings by a score of 2-0 with 642 in attendance at Pohlman Field in Midwest League action on Tuesday night.
The Snappers complete a series sweep to up their record to 75-59 (32-32 in the second half). Clinton's sixth straight defeat leaves them with a 64-69 record (31-33 in the second half).
Avila (7-4) was able to weave in and out of trouble several times to keep the LumberKings off the board. With the bases loaded in the third, Avila struck out Dario Pizzano and got a fly out from Marcus Littlewood to end the frame. The Lumberkings threatened again in the fourth, putting two on with nobody out but Avila induced a double play and a lineout. He finished his outing by getting consecutive foul outs with men on first and second to end the sixth inning. Overall, he allowed just three hits and struck out three.
While Avila didn't receive a ton of run support, he received enough for a win. Beloit didn't take long to score their first run, as Ryan Mathews (2-3, HR, RBI, 2 runs) led-off the first inning with a single and scored two batters later on a hit by Christopher Bostick. In the fifth, Mathews made the score 2-0 by crushing a pitch from Charles Kaalekahi (5-5) over the left field fence for a solo bomb, his 13th in 2013.
When Avila departed, Austin House took over on the bump and hurled two innings of relief, giving up one hit, no walks and no runs. House turned the ball over to Tyler Vail in the ninth and Vail earned his sixth save with a scoreless inning that cemented the shutout.
The Snappers begin their final home series of the year on Wednesday, a three game set with the Burlington Bees. Beloit turns to RHP Devyi Jimenez (2-4, 6.29 ERA) while Burlington's starting pitcher will be LHP Chris O'Grady (2-1, 2.36 ERA). The game will begin at 7:00pm. If you come to Pohlman Field early, you can watch BP and enjoy a drink on the right field deck. The deck will open up from 4:00pm to 5:30pm and, for no cover charge, you can enjoy $1.50 Millers and Leinenkugels. Once the gates open at 6:00pm, that will be the start of a great night at Pohlman Field as the Snappers host I Have a Dream Night, commemorating the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream Speech." All tickets will be the same price and audio from the speech will be played at the ballpark, as well as other tributes to this great man. Also, don't forget to visit the Snappers Facebook page and Twitter account, @Snappersbaseball, to vote on the day's special offer on Social Media Wednesday.
