Bees Fall Short in 6-5 Defeat
August 27, 2013 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Burlington Bees News Release
The Burlington Bees fell behind early after a grand slam by Rio Ruiz in the first inning and could not recover en route to a 6-5 loss to the Quad Cities River Bandits on Tuesday night at Community Field.
Burlington (52-77, 26-38) put together an epic comeback in Monday night's contest, but Tuesday night's comeback attempt fell just short against Quad Cities (76-56, 38-25).
Brandon Love (4-7) struggled with his control early and it put the Bees in a huge hole. Tony Kemp led off the game and was hit by a pitch. Austin Elkins walked and Teoscar Hernandez followed with a bunt single to load the bases. Bobby Borchering struck out swinging, but Rio Ruiz sent a 3-2 pitch over the left field wall for his first career grand slam.
The Bees quickly cut into the deficit in the bottom of the inning against Daniel Minor. Riley Good led off with a single and advanced to third on Pedro Toribio's double. Angel Rosa singled home Good and with runners on the corners and nobody out, Wade Hinkle grounded into a double play, which scored Toribio.
Love and Minor exchanged zeroes in the second, but they both gave up a run in the third. Ruiz singled home Hernandez in the top of the frame, while Rosa doubled in Toribio in the bottom of the inning. Toribio had reached on an infield single and stole second and third base.
In the fourth, Jobduan Morales smacked his first triple of 2013 and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jordan Scott. Zach Wright answered right back with his third home run of the season.
Juan Minaya (3-6) came in for Minor and was lights out, striking out the side in the fifth and sixth innings. The lone run he surrendered was on a Hinkle solo shot in the eighth. Minaya struck out the side in the eighth and finished the game with a season-high nine strikeouts in four innings to earn the win.
Andrew Walter (S, 1) tossed a perfect ninth for his first save and prevented any drama from occurring at Community Field.
Burlington now heads to Beloit for its final road trip of the season. The three-game series will begin on Wednesday night when Chris O'Grady takes on Deyvi Jimenez at 7:00 p.m.
