Peoria Chiefs News Release

Cedar Rapids, IA- The Peoria Chiefs scored first on Monday night but ultimately lost 3-1 on two unearned runs for their fifth straight loss. The loss, to the first-place Cedar Rapids Kernels, drops the Chiefs to 28-35 in the second half and 66-64 overall. The Chiefs are three games behind the Clinton LumberKings in the Wild Card race with seven games left on the season.

After both teams went scoreless in the first inning, Peoria got on the board in the second against Tim Atherton. With one out, Jordan Walton singled to shortstop and Trevor Martin singled up the middle. Juan Herrera's grounder to third took a bad hop and hit Kernels third baseman Joel Licon in the mouth to load the bases. Ildemaro Vargas put the Chiefs on top 1-0 with a grounder to first base as Walton scored. Gerwuins Velazco struck out to end the inning with runners at second and third.

The Chiefs first lead in five games was short-lived. With two down in the bottom of the second, Michael Quesada doubled to left center and scored when Walton couldn't handle a hard smash from Ryan Walker. Walker moved to second when the ball bounced into foul territory and scored on a single to left by Pineda. The two unearned runs off Chris Perry put the Kernels on top 2-1.

Cedar Rapids put the game out of reach with a run in the third. Tyler Grimes doubled to left to start the inning and moved to third on a one-out infield single by Mike Gonzales. Bo Altobelli singled to left to score Grimes for the 3-1 Kernels lead.

The Chiefs didn't get another runner past first base until the ninth when Vargas reached on a two-out infield single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Velazco grounded out to shortstop to end the game.

Perry (2-3) took the loss allowing three runs, one earned, on eight hits. He allowed three walks and struck out three. Steve Sabatino threw one shutout inning with one hit allowed. Dixon Llorens threw a perfect inning with a strikeout.
