Peoria Chiefs News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA- The Peoria Chiefs scored more than one run for the first time in five games but still fell to the Cedar Rapids Kernels 4-2 on Tuesday night. The loss, their sixth straight, drops the Chiefs to 28-36 in the second half and 66-65 overall with six games left. In the Wild Card race the Chiefs remain three games behind Clinton, who also lost their sixth straight on Tuesday, and Peoria hosts the LumberKings the next three nights.
Both teams scored unearned runs early with the Kernels getting on the board in the bottom of the first. Jonathan Murphy reached on a Trevor Martin error to lead off the inning and eventually scored when the Chiefs couldn't turn a double play with the bases loaded. The Chiefs evened the score in the second inning as Jordan Walton singled and scored two batters later when Ryan Walker's throw to first sailed into the Kernels dugout.
Another Chiefs defensive mistake in the second inning put the Kernels on top for good. With one on and one out, Jeremias Pineda hit a potential inning-ending double play ball to shortstop. However, Juan Herrera's throw to second base sailed into right field and the Kernels loaded the bases on an infield hit by Murphy. Joel Licon's single to right scored two and put the hosts on top 3-1.
The Chiefs loaded the bases with one out in the third against Miguel Sulbaran but came up empty as the Kernels turned a 1-2-3 double play. Peoria left a runner at second base in the fourth inning and trailed 3-1 after six.
In the seventh the Chiefs loaded the bases with no outs on a single, error and walk against reliever Christian Powell. Adam Walker made a sliding catch in shallow right to rob C.J. McElroy Jr. of a run-scoring hit as Herrera held at third. Nick Martini brought Herrera home with a groundout to cut the lead to 3-2 before Martin grounded out to end the inning. Mike Gonzlaes put the Kernels on top 4-2 with a solo home run in the eighth and the Chiefs went in order in the ninth for their sixth straight loss.
Silfredo Garcia (4-5) allowed three runs, one earned, on five hits over six innings. He struck out two and walked two in the quality start. Brady Adamek threw a perfect inning with a strikeout. Joe Donofrio allowed a solo home run in the eighth and struck out three with three hits allowed.
