Shower refreshes Pillsbury, Otters win 4-2
June 8, 2006 - Frontier League (FL)
Evansville Otters News Release
Washington, PA-Not even a little rain could stop Chris Pillsbury. The Evansville Otters' starting pitcher absorbed the break in the action due to the Pennsylvania shower and actually returned stronger than before as he pitched seven strong innings, allowing just one earned run while striking out a season nine to pitch his team to a 4-2 win. The win was the first of the year for Pillsbury (1-0) and continued his string of stingy pitching as the right-hander has pitched three very strong outings.
The Otters scored the games first two runs, thanks to some timely hitting. Dale Mueller extended his Frontier League best hitting streak to eleven games with his first inning single. He would come around to score on a Matt Edwards double to make it 1-0. Rickey Clinton followed with a first pitch hit to right field to plate Edwards, and the Otters were out to a quick two run lead.
Washington climbed right back into the game, scoring once in the first and once in the second. The run in the second inning would be an un-earned run as the inning was aided by a passed ball.
The score would stay knotted at two apiece when the rain began to fall in the bottom of the fourth inning. Pillsbury was in a bit of a jam at the time and weathered the storm, both literally and figuratively. After the twenty-eight minute delay, he got a fly out on the first pitch he threw after the break, and set it on cruise control after that. Chris retired the last ten batters he faced before leaving in the eighth as his pitch count had topped the century mark.
The combination of Donny Langdon and Mike Bille once again proved to be a successful one as Bille notched his fourth save of the year, retiring the final four batters in the game.
Evansville got a multi-hit evening from Beau Blacken, and saw Rickey Clinton drive home a pair. Washington got a two hit performance meanwhile from Mike Arbinger in the losing effort.
Reliever Walt Novosel (0-2) took the loss for Washington, as he took over after the rain delay for starter Tom Cochran who left with the score tied at two.
Evansville got on the board with a pair of runs in the first inning.
Otter Tracks: The rubber matchup of the series will feature lefty Mike Greenhouse (1-0, 0.00 ERA) for Evansville. He'll be opposed by right-hander Pat Kohorst who is 2-0 with a 0.90 ERA. If their numbers live up, it should be a dandy pitching matchup.
Again several streaks were extended by Evansville, as Mueller made it eleven straight, Clinton five, Edwards four and Goldbach four. Washington's Jason Boyd meanwhile extended his hitting streak to ten games with a 1-4 night.
