SAUGET, Ill. ¬- Rockford took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, scoring the first earned run off Gateway starter Erik Dessau (3-0) this season. It was all downhill from there.
The Grizzlies batted around in the fourth, scoring five runs off starting pitcher Dane Towery (1-2). They scored two more in the fifth off reliever Grant Payton, then batted around again in the sixth against Ryan Brnardic, making his first appearance of the season, scoring four more times to close out the scoring.
Rico Santana went 2-for-4, with singles in the first and sixth inning. He scored in the first on a Bart Hunton double. Jake Bowen also went 2-for-4. Joe Anthonsen and Mike Bidwell had the other two Rockford hits.
Tom Lyons pitched two scoreless innings to close out the game.
The rubber game will be Friday at 7:05. The RiverHawks will return to Rockford for a six-game homestand starting on Saturday against Traverse City.
