June 8, 2006 - Frontier League (FL)
Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
Tony Casoli tossed the first complete game shutout in Beach Bums history, the second of his career and Traverse City knocked a team record 19 hits as the Beach Bums routed the Windy City ThunderBolts 12-0.
Traverse City wasted no time getting on the board. With one out, Steve Young singled and stole second. Mike Reese then singled through the left side moving Young to third. With runners at the corners, Reese stole second. Al Roach then made John Hummel pay for the earlier singles as he doubled to deep right field, scoring both Young and Reese and making it 2-0 TC.
The Beach Bums added a run in the third on an RBI single by Justin Holmes to make it 3-0. Traverse City broke the game open in the fourth. Clay Blevins led off with a single. Justin Holmes then doubled moving Blevins to third. T-Blots pitching then imploded as they walked the next three batters, forcing in two runs. Doug Garcia kept the rally going, delivering an RBI single, scoring Steve Young and making it 6-0. The scoring closed when with the bases still loaded, Nathan Gravley delivered a sacrifice fly, scoring Mike Reese and putting TC ahead by seven.
Not content to stay there, Traverse City added a run to make it 8-0 in the top of the sixth when Nathan Gravley doubled to lead off the inning followed by an RBI single by Nick Batkoski. The Beach Bums were able to pound on four more runs in the seventh on RBI hits by Steve Young and Kevin White. For Young it was his fourth hit of the game, the second four hit game of his career.
Casoli was magnificent for the Beach Bums as he went the route, scattering four hits. At one point he retired 14 consecutive ThunderBolts. Only three T-Bolts advanced as far as second base. The right-hander needed 109 pitches to complete the shutout.
Traverse City will go for the sweep tomorrow night with Ryan Gehring (1-1, 5.21) on the mound for Traverse City going up against Mike Mlotkowski (0-1, 4.50) for Windy City. Game time is set for 8:05 EST and can be heard on 94.3 The Fox FM.
