Lake County Captains News Release
(Eastlake, Ohio)---- Indians lefty Jason Stanford making a rehab appearance with the Captains, gave up three runs on three hits to give the Delmarva Shorebirds a 3-1 victory Saturday night at Classic Park. Starting pitcher Cody Bunkelman tossed a no-hitter through seven innings prior to Stanford entering in the eighth.
After getting out of a bases loaded jam in the first Bunkelman proceeded to retire the side in order five straight times, striking out three and walking three in the process. Delmarva starter Luis Ramirez (8-5) was just as impressive on the mound, allowing no runs while yielding just two hits, and striking out seven.
The Shorebirds (24-10, 54-50) catcher Juan Gutierrez walked to lead off the eighth inning and was moved to second on Eric Grimm's sacrifice. After Quincy Ascencion's groundout, Arturo Rivas came on to pinch run for Gutierrez and scored on Gary Cates RBI single off Stanford (0-1) in which Cates took second on a throw home. Shortstop Pete Shier followed with a single of his own to score Cates and he also took second on a throwing error by Captains third baseman Matt Whitney. Finally, Shier crossed the plate on left fielder Jake Duncan's single to cap the scoring for the Shorebirds in the eighth.
The Captains (15-20, 55-50) plated a run in the bottom of the ninth as Whitney singled home Brian Finegan with the bases loaded.
The Captains and the Shorebirds will face each other for the final time this season Sunday afternoon at 2:05 (WELW AM 1330).
