Lakewood, NJ -The BlueClaws (18-18) and Grasshoppers (14-21), Single-A affiliate of the Florida Marlins, were locked into a pitchers duel on Saturday night with Lakewood winning 4-2. The game was tied at 1-1 before Ryan Frith broke the tie with a two run homer in the seventh.
BlueClaws starter Matt Sweeney (3-3) pitched eight innings of five hit ball allowing just one run. Sweeney walked a batter and struck out three to record his second win in a row. With the score tied 1-1 in the seventh Mike Dzurilla drew a lead off walk then moved up to second on Doug Gredvig's sacrifice. Dzurilla advanced to third on the throwing error from the pitcher Scott Nestor when Nestor tried to pick off Dzurilla. Then with two outs in the inning Frith connected for his team leading 13th homer of the year, a two run shot to left field.
Lakewood got an insurance run in the eighth on Jason Jaramillo's two-out RBI base hit for a 4-1 lead. Greg Golson reached on a base hit with one out then stole second, his 18th of the year.
Jacob Barrack pitched the ninth to record his 10th save of the year. Barrack allowed a run on two hits while walking nobody and striking out one.
Each team plated a run in their first at bat. The Grasshoppers Jai Miller led off the game with a double then came around to score on Brad McCann's RBI base hit for a 1-0 lead.
The BlueClaws came right back in the bottom half of the first. Golson led off the inning with a homer to left field, his second of the year. It was the 12th time this year the BlueClaws led off an inning with a homer.
Golson finished the night 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Jaramillo went 2-for-4 with an RBI while Frith was 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI's.
Lakewood wraps up their home stand and series on Sunday night with the Grasshoppers. Lakewood will send left-hander Derek Griffith (6-9, 4.16) to the mound while Greensboro will counter with right-hander David Humen (3-2, 4.30). First pitch on Sunday is at 5:05 p.m. with on-air time at 4:50 p.m. on 1310 WADB and www.blueclaws.com.
This season, the Lakewood BlueClaws are celebrating their fifth anniversary of providing great fun in the Jersey sun.
