Sand Gnats chopped 7-2 by Braves

Savannah Sand Gnats News Release

SAVANNAH, Ga. - From the beginning of the Gnats Saturday night 7-2 loss to Rome at Historic Grayson Stadium, it was clear that Savannah ace Collin Balester didn't have his best stuff. Balester, who usually befuddles batters with knee-bending breaking balls and insanity-inducing change ups, wasn't on. Braves leadoff hitter Matt Young singled and number-two hitter Yunel Escobar walked setting the table for a Braves breakout. Both scored a couple pitches later on Brandon Jones' smash deep into the left field bleachers. With no outs in the top of the first, Balester found himself in unfamiliar territory, down 3-0. After working his way out of the inning Balester appeared to settle in retiring the Braves in order in the second. In the third, Rome added a run on three straight singles to lead off the frame, but Balester recovered to stop the rally. Rome added a fifth tally in the fifth inning as result of a single and a two-base error committed by Gnats center fielder Rogearvin Bernadina. The lone offensive highlight for Savannah was an Edgardo Baez two-run homer in the eight. In addition to Baez' tenth home run, Trey Webb continued to swing a hot bat registering three more base hits, giving him 38 for the month of July. Come see Savannah start another winning streak against the Braves Sunday, July 31 at 2:05 pm. Buy your tickets online now at www.sandgnats.com, or by calling the Gnats box office at 912-351-9150.
