Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - Two trends continued during Saturday's series finale between the Greenville Drive and Delmarva Shorebirds. The Shorebirds continued their hot offensive attack and Drive starting pitcher Daniel Bard struggled with his control.
The Shorebirds, who finished with a .358 batting average in the four-game series, totaled 14 hits on their way to a 10-1 victory.
For the third straight start at West End Field, Bard was unable to last more than three innings. The right-hander had trouble at times finding the plate, walking five in 2.2 innings. Delmarva tagged Bard for five hits before he exited.
Delmarva got off to a quick start plating runs in the first three innings for an early 5-0 lead. The Shorebirds only needed three hits through the first two innings for three runs. Bard walked the first two batters in the first and Brandon Snyder knocked in a run with a single.
The next inning Bard issued a leadoff walk to Brandon Tripp, who scored on David Cash's single. Cash ended up scoring on a wild pitch with two outs. In the third, Miguel Abreu hit a sacrifice fly after Snyder and Bobby Rowell singled to leadoff the inning. Cash then laced a two-out RBI-single.
Brantley New did not fair much better for the Drive, surrendering five runs over 2.2 innings as well. After tossing a scoreless fourth inning, New gave up a two-run homer to Tripp in the fifth. The Shorebirds backed that up by sending seven batters to the plate in the sixth, pounding out five hits and three runs.
Although Richie Lentz allowed four hits and walked three, he struckout four in 3.0 scoreless innings. Joshua Papelbon continued his turnaround from a dismal July, adding 0.2 scoreless innings to finish the game.
Unfortunately the damage had already been done. The Drive finally managed to push a run across in the bottom of the seventh as Lars Anderson hit a solo homer, his ninth of the year. It was Anderson's first long ball since July 5th.
The Drive will look to get back on the winning track as the Lakewood BlueClaws, affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies, come to town for a four-game series to closeout the home stand. Right-hander Joseph Guerra will toe the rubber for Greenville as Lakewood counters with right-hander Edgar Garcia.
Sunday will also mark the fifth game of the Drive's "Crazy 8" promotion featuring a classic car showcase presented by Spinx. The Antique Automobile Club - South Carolina Chapter will provide more than 20 cars to be displayed outside West End Field and along the concourse. In addition, Sunday is "Family FunDay" in which kids get to run the bases at the conclusion of the game. Tickets to all Drive home games can be purchased by calling (864) 240-4500 or by visiting www.GreenvilleDrive.com.
