Pucetas Wins 14th, Jackets Avoid Sweep

Augusta, GA - The GreenJackets (50-20, 27-22) avoided a four game sweep by the Lakewood BlueClaws (33-32, 25-22) on Saturday night with an 8-2 win. Starter Kevin Pucetas recorded his team leading 14th win of the season and Brett Pill drove in three runs to lead the offense.

Pucetas (14-3) worked five shutout innings and allowed just four hits to become the second pitcher in the South Atlantic League to 14 wins. Pucetas also walked three batters and struck out two.

The GreenJackets took the early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Pill connected for a two-out RBI single scoring Emmanuel Burriss. It was the first lead Augusta had in the four game series and the GreenJackets never relinquished it.

Augusta added three more runs in the third inning for a 4-0 lead on back-to-back two-out RBI hits from Ryan Rohlinger and Henry Gutierrez. Rohlinger connected for an RBI double scoring Bobby Felmy then Gutierrez followed with a two-run single plating Pill and Rohlinger.

The GreenJackets added two more runs in the fourth inning on an RBI double from Joey Dyche and an RBI ground out from Burriss to take a 6-0 lead.

The BlueClaws broke up the shutout in the sixth inning plating two runs off reliever Adam Ortiz. Charlie Yarbrough and Gus Milner began the half inning with back-to-back doubles for Lakewood's first run. Joel Naughton followed with a base hit then Fidel Hernandez walked to load the bases and chase Ortiz. Paul Lussier came in relief and Alan Robbins connected for an RBI sac-fly to left for the BlueClaws second and final run of the game.

Lussier worked two shutout innings and did not allow a hit or walk while striking out one.

Mike Musgrave pitched the final two shutout innings allowing just one hit and striking out two.

The GreenJackets capped of their scoring in the seventh inning when Pill connected for a two-run double for an 8-2 Augusta lead.

The GreenJackets continue their home stand when they open a four game series against the Delmarva Shorebirds on Sunday. Lefty Clayton Tanner (11-6, 2.97) makes the start for Augusta while right-hander Kyle Schmidt (4-8, 3.72) goes for Delmarva. First pitch will be at 5:35 p.m.
