Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

Kannapolis, NC - Two unearned runs allowed by the Kannapolis Intimidators in the top of the 12th broke a 7-7 tie and gave the Lake County Captains a 9-7 victory Saturday night at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium in a game that lasted four hours and 11 minutes. The loss for the Intimidators (23-25, 55-63) meant a series split in the four games against the Captains (23-24, 54-63).

Kannapolis had built a foundation on answering Lake County's call through the first six innings. Lake County busted out two runs in the fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead. But, in the bottom of the inning, the Intimidators put up a six spot with the first five guys getting on base. Kannapolis batted around to take a 6-2 lead.

The lead lasted until the top of the sixth when Lake County scored runs to tie the game. Again, though, it was not long before the Intimidators took the lead back, scoring a run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 7-6.

But, after the sixth, Lake County would not have any more calls answered. The Captains tied it right back up in the top of the seventh and the score stayed the same all the way until the 12th inning. Steve Spurgeon came on to start the inning and the leadoff man, Cirilo Cumberbatch, reached on a ground ball that was misplayed by Mike Grace. After a strikeout and a fly out, Spurgeon walked Lucas Montero to put runners on first and second. Roman Pena then hit a bleeder through the right side of the infield off Brandon Allen's glove and into right field to score Cumberbatch. Montero later scored on a wild pitch.

Lake County reliever Austin Creps came on in the bottom of the 12th and got two strikeouts and a ground out to end the game.

Jake Rasner made the start for Kannapolis, allowing six runs on eight hits in 5.2 innings. His winless streak lengthened to seven starts. After Noe Rodriguez allowed a run in one inning, Ryan Rote went 4.1 innings of shutout ball after working an inning in Friday night's game as well. Spurgeon (5-1) took the loss, his first of the season.

Allen had three doubles in six at-bats to pace the Intimidators offense. Lee Cruz had two hits. Cruz, Sergio Miranda, and John Shelby each had two RBIs. Shelby extended his hitting streak to 16 games with a single in the fourth inning, tying him with Chris Carter for the longest hitting streak on the team this year.

Kannapolis dropped to 4-4 on the year in extra-inning games. The four-hour, 11-minute marathon was the longest game of the year for the Intimidators.
