Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, MD: The Delmarva Shorebirds (4-19) earned their first win of the week against the Fayetteville Woodpeckers (15-9) as they rallied to walk it off in the ninth inning, 4-3.
Starting pitcher, Luis De León, immediately brought the fire for the Shorebirds as he tossed an immaculate inning, striking out all three batters in the first inning on three pitches.
Delmarva quickly spotted De León a lead in the bottom half as Aron Estrada scored Thomas Sosa with an RBI double to give the Shorebirds a 1-0 advantage.
Fayetteville counter-punched in the top of the third as Oliver Carillo put the Woodpeckers ahead with a two-run shot. They'd tack on one more run on a sacrifice fly by Waner Luciano, giving the Woodpeckers a 3-1 lead.
De León settled back in for Delmarva after the third as he covered 4.2 innings in his start, striking out a career-best 10 batters.
With the score still 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Kevin Guerrero delivered with a two-strike, two-out homer over the wall in right-center, tying the game at three, his first Single-A home run.
Behind the work of Brayner Sanchez, Harif Frias, and Jared Beck, the Delmarva bullpen shut down the Woodpeckers by not allowing any runs in their 4.1 innings combined.
With the game still tied in the ninth, Angel Tejada led off with a triple to left-center, barely beating the relay throw to third base. That set up Maxwell Costes who won the game for the Shorebirds with a game-winning single on an 0-2 pitch to complete the come-from-behind win, 4-3.
Jared Beck (1-3) earned the win in relief for Delmarva with Sandy Mejia (1-1) taking the loss for Fayetteville.
Angel Tejada led the Delmarva offense with his first three-hit game of the season, singling twice in addition to his triple in the ninth inning while also stealing two bases. Aron Estrada collected multiple hits including his RBI double in the first, and the pitching staff totaled 15 strikeouts, led by De León who set a new personal-best with 10.
The Shorebirds will now look for back-to-back wins as they send Michael Forret to the mound on Friday night to face Raimy Rodriguez for the Woodpeckers. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
