Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
The Shorebirds offense exploded for a season-high 18 hits, scoring 10 unanswered runs to overcome an early deficit and smother the Hagerstown Suns on Wednesday night. David Cash's three-run home run with two outs in the seconds got Delmarva on the board, and the âBirds would score two in third, one in the fifth, two in the sixth, and then a run apiece in the seventh and the eighth.
Cash led the Shorebirds offense with his second four-hit-game in as many days. The sophomore Shorebird was 4-6 with four RBI and scored two runs. Ryan Adams also had four base hits for Delmarva while driving in three, and Matt Angle finished a home run short of the cycle in his three base knocks. Joe Nowicki and Tyler Henson each recorded multiple hit days as well, as eight of the nine Shorebird starters had a base hit, and seven of the nine scored a run.
The beneficiary of the sensational run support was southpaw starter Zach Britton, who earned his first win of the year. After allowing a run on a couple hits in the first, Britton held the Suns scoreless into the sixth. Three soft singles loaded the bases with nobody out, but Britton was able to strike out Hagerstown's Michael Burgess to get out number one. He then handed the ball over to Cliff Flagello, who struck out Tim Pahuta and induced a pop-up from Stephen Englund to retire the side and strand the bases juiced.
Flagello pitched three and two-thirds scoreless innings in relief, striking out 7 while walking 2. The Suns loaded the bases again in the seventh, but Flagello struck out the side to protect Delmarva's healthy lead.
It was the first time this season that Delmarva scored in double figures, and the sixth time this year that they held their opponent to three runs or less.
Since losing the first two meetings with Hagerstown on opening weekend, the Shorebirds have now taken four of the last five from the Suns.
