Hickory Crawdads News Release
The Hickory Crawdads trailed for the majority of Wednesday's day game with the Lexington Legends, but still came back to take a 4-3 lead into the ninth inning. Things then continued to look good for the Crawdads as the first two Legends hitters went down in order. But one walk and one two-run home run later, a shell shocked Hickory found itself down 5-4.
A 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth inning failed to deliver the Crawdads a miracle finish at L.P. Frans Stadium, instead dropping Hickory (8-6) to its second straight loss.
The 'Dads trailed for the majority of the game, down 2-0 after two innings and trailing 3-0 into the bottom of the sixth.
The sixth inning turned out to be a historic one, as the Crawdads plated two runs to get within one score.
In the sixth, Miles Durham -- who led off the inning with a double to extend his league-best hitting streak to 11 games -- scored the 10,000th run in Hickory Crawdads history on an RBI ground out by Andrew Walker.
The Crawdads began play in 1993 and have seen 246 position players suit up, with Durham setting the milestone.
Hickory's good times continued in the bottom of the eighth inning, when Tom Hagan crushed a two-out double off the right field wall to plate Durham and Erik Huber and give the Crawdads a 4-3 lead.
But reliever Adam Simon would surrender the game-winning home run to Chris Corrado in the next frame, earning Lexington (4-10) its first two-game winning streak of the season. Hickory has now lost two games in a row for the second time this year.
Simon took the loss, dropping to 0-1. Brett Robinson (1-1) earned the win for Lexington while Reid Kelly sewed up the save.
Notable performances for Hickory included Durham (2-4, 2 2B, 2 R), Hagan (2-3, 2B, 2 RBI) and Huber (1-4, 2 R).
Lexington received a stellar starting effort from Sergio Severino, who didn't figure in the decision but struck out seven against two walks and two hits in five scoreless innings. Matt Cusick also led off the game with a solo home run for the second straight night.
With Greensboro's win Wednesday, the Crawdads dropped to second place in the Northern Division for the first time in six days.
Hickory attempts to get back in the win column Thursday, when the Crawdads send RHP Dustin Molleken (1-0, 0.75 ERA) to the mound. He will face Legends LHP Colt Adams (0-1, 6.14 ERA).
