Shorebirds Lose a Tight One

July 25, 2007 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

Greensboro, NC- Jacob Blackwood's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth proved to be the difference as the Greensboro Grasshoppers won its seventh straight game, a 2-1 victory over the Delmarva Shorebirds.

After Spike McDougall led off the sixth with a walk, he advanced to second on a wild pitch by Delmarva reliever Reid Hamblet. Two batters later, Blackwood sent a fly ball to left, deep enough for McDougall to score the game-winning run.

The game was a pitcher's duel, as Greensboro starter Kyle Winters went seven innings and allowed an earned run and struck out five. Brad Stone and Blake Jones each went one inning, with Jones striking out two in the ninth for his 17th save. Wilfrido Perez started for Delmarva, but only went two and a third innings. He allowed a run on four hits and struck out two. Hamblet went three innings and gave up a run. Ryan Ouelette and Luis Lebron combined to throw two and a third scoreless innings.

The Shorebirds scored first as they took the lead in the third. Victor Castillo led off with a double, and scored on a single to left by Danny Figueroa two batters later. Greensboro answered back immediately, as Greg Burns led off the bottom of the third with a solo homerun off of Perez.

Tomorrow's game starts at 7:00, with Pedro Beato going for the Shorebirds on the mound. He will be opposed by Cristhian Martinez for the Grasshoppers.
