Lexington Legends News Release
The last time the Lakewood BlueClaws came to Lexington, they finished a two-game sweep of the Legends on their way to the 2006 South Atlantic League championship. Things were decidedly different during their return visit on Wednesday night at Applebee's Park. Jordan Parraz and Koby Clemens greeted Lakewood's Carlos Monasterios with a pair of home runs, and Bud Norris pitched seven strong innings to stifle the BlueClaws' attack and net his first win of the season in a 3-2 Lexington victory.
Monasterios (9-7) coasted through the game's first three innings before running into trouble in the fourth. Tim Torres walked to lead off the inning, and Parraz followed with a no-doubter over the bleachers in left. An out later, Clemens added his blast, and again the outfielders could only watch as the ball sailed well beyond the left-center field fence. The burst in the fourth gave Lexington a two-run advantage.
Although meager, that was all the offense Norris (1-4) would need. He pitched seven innings, striking out eight, walking none, and allowing two runs on only four hits. Lakewood's only runs came on a sacrifice fly in the third and an RBI-groundout in the sixth by leadoff hitter Quintin Berry.
With the score 3-2 after seven innings, Chad Wagler entered the game in relief. The situation looked dire in the eighth when Wagler yielded a double to Welinson Baez and Doug Morales followed that hit up with a bunt single to third, putting runners on the corners with no one out. The Legends elected to play the infield back and concede the run, but Wagler struck out Carl Henry, Jr. and coaxed Berry into a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning. Berry, one of the fastest runners in the South Atlantic League, nearly beat the relay to first.
Wagler went on to pitch an uneventful ninth, striking out two in the inning to nail down his fourth save. The loss was Lakewood's fifth in a row, a season high for the BlueClaws.
The Legends will attempt to rise above .500 tomorrow evening in a game beginning at 7:05 p.m. Lefties Doug Arguello (6-7, 4.94) and Sergio Escalona (0-4, 5.33) will take the hill on Bald and the Beautiful night. Anyone electing to shave his or her head at the gate will gain free admission.
