Greenville Drive News Release

Greenville, SC - The Drive dug themselves an early hole Tuesday evening versus the Charleston RiverDogs, and were unable climb their way out as they fell to their cross-state rival 7-5 in the series opener.

Daniel Bard (3-2) was off to a rocky start immediately, plunking leadoff batter Mitch Hilligoss, who after stealing second and advancing to third on a wild pitch, scored on Kyle Anson's double. That was just the beginning of Bard's struggles as the RiverDogs plated two more runs in the inning, one on a wild pitch and another on a sacrifice fly.

The control issues carried over into the second inning as he walked James Cooper and hit Wilmer Pino with a pitch to start the frame. After a double steal, another wild pitch allowed Cooper to score. Anson then collected his second RBI with a sacrifice fly. The RiverDogs extended their lead to 6-0 in the third with a leadoff homer by Kevin Smith.

Bard exited after the third inning, having allowed three hits, a walk, hitting three batters, and tossing four wild pitches. Meanwhile Bard's counterpart, Mike Dunn, was showing why he was amongst the league leaders in earned run average. The southpaw limited the Drive to three hits through the first four innings.

However, the Drive finally found his number. Having not issued a walk through the first four innings, Dunn gave free passes to Lars Anderson and Argenis Diaz. Trailing 6-0, Chih-Hsien Chiang delivered a two-run double and Jon Still, who finished with three hits, followed with a crushing blow to move Greenville within two runs.

The RiverDogs and Drive traded runs as Charleston added one more run in the sixth and Greenville scored in the seventh. Unfortunately the Drive would not be able to make-up any more ground as Jonathan Hovis earned his 23rd save of the season by tossing two scoreless innings to end the game.

A pair of Chris', Jones and Province, provided solid relief out of the bullpen allowing just one run in the final six innings. Jones fanned five in four innings, while Province added two scoreless frames.

The Drive and RiverDogs continue their four-game series Thursday evening at West End Field with first pitch set for 7:05 PM. Southpaw Felix Doubront will toe the rubber for Greenville as Charleston counters with right-hander Eric Hacker.

In addition, Thursday night will feature live music and $1 drinks in the Spinx 500 Club. Tickets to all Drive home games can be purchased by calling the Drive ticket office at (864) 240-4500 or by visiting www.GreenvilleDrive.com.
