Shorebirds Blank BlueClaws 4-0 in Opener

Salisbury, Md. - David Baker, Randy Henry and Luis Noel combined to toss a four-hit shutout in game one against Lakewood to lead the Shorebirds to a 4-0 win at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Monday night. The Shorebirds finished without an error for the first time since July 20.

The Shorebirds were first to strike in the second inning. Adam Gaylord was issued a leadoff walk. Garabez Rosa followed with a single to put runners at first and second. After Michael Rooney dropped a sacrifice bunt, Mikey Planeta hit a sacrifice fly to right field.

In the fifth inning, the Shorebirds added a run. Riley Hornback led off with a single to extend his hit streak to five games, a season high. After a wild pitch advanced him to second, Joe Oliveira delivered a line drive single to right-center field to give the 'Birds a 2-0 lead.

Shorebirds starter David Baker lasted 6.1 innings and allowed just three hits and no runs. Baker did not allow a runner to advance beyond first base until the sixth inning.

The Shorebirds increased their lead in the seventh inning. Riley Hornback reached on a hit by pitch. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Oliveira. Then, on a low throw to first by third baseman Steve Singleton, Hornback came into score. Later in the inning, Michael Ohlman hit a flare single into right-center field to give the Shorebirds a 4-0 lead.

Randy Henry stranded two runners in the seventh and tossed a perfect eighth inning. Luis Noel entered in the ninth inning and retired the side in order to end the game.

The Shorebirds have won the series opener in three consecutive series.

The Shorebirds are back in action on Tuesday night at 7:05 against the Lakewood BlueClaws. LHP Jarret Martin is the scheduled starter for the Shorebirds.
