Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Savannah, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets scored twice in the eighth inning to take their first lead since the second inning in a 4-3 comeback win over the Savannah Sand Gnats on Monday night in the opener of the final regular season series between the two teams this year.
Down a run in the eighth, Carlos Willoughby tripled into the right field corner to lead off the inning. Ryan Lollis drilled a one-out RBI single to right that scored Willoughby to tie the game at three. After Josh Mazzola reached on an error that put runners at the corners, Lollis scored the tying run on a Ryan Scoma RBI groundout to put Augusta up for good at 4-3.
The GreenJackets got the first lead of the game in the second, but they didn't hold it for long. Jeff Arnold's RBI single put Augusta up by a run before the Sand Gnats took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the inning on Luis Nieves's two-run triple to left-center. Savannah added to the lead in the fourth inning on a throwing error that scored Nieves from second base to give the Gnats a 3-1 edge.
Augusta got a run in the sixth on a Lollis sacrifice fly to make it a one-run game, scoring Willoughby - who'd walked, stolen second, moved to third on a groundout and then scored on the sacrifice fly to bring home the second GreenJackets run of the night.
The comeback effort wouldn't have been possible without the stellar relief pitching the GreenJackets got to allow them to stay in the game in the first place. Austin Fleet (7-3) fired two scoreless innings of one-hit ball for the GreenJackets, striking out three of the six hitters he retired. After a scoreless inning from Seth Rosin, Brett Bochy retired three of the four he faced - stranding the tying run at second - to earn his third save of the season.
The GreenJackets have now won three of their last four and will send Gaspar Santiago (3-5, 4.11) to the mound to try and make it two in a row against the Sand Gnats. Savannah will send Yohan Almonte (4-6, 3.77) to the hill to oppose on Tuesday night. First pitch comes at 7:05 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 6:50, airing on WRDW-AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .
Single-game tickets for any GreenJackets home game are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS while further information can be found online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .
